A Raised Seat to Keep you on your Feet

November 23, 2009 by rjwhitmore

KEEPING STEADY MATTERS: RAISE THAT SEAT:
The ability to easily sit down and get up from the toilet is something most of us take for granted. For elders with mobility issues this can be quite difficult and potentially dangerous due to the toilet bowl’s low position. Most toilets are only 15 inches high. Furthermore, people are generally very sensitive about their privacy in the bathroom, making them less likely to ask for help, even if they are having difficulty. Fortunately, help is available. A raised toilet seat can make going to the bathroom easier and less dangerous by increasing the height of a standard toilet by up to 5 inches. Some seats include grab bars for added support, further reducing the chance of a fall. ElderBrief has highlighted a few of the products currently available. As always, caregivers are advised to consult with their loved one as each product may not be appropriate for every situation.

Carex E-Z Lock Raised Toilet Seat:

The Carez E-Z Lock Raised Toilet Seat has a locking mechanism that secures the seat to the toilet bowl. It also has cushioned and adjustable handles. The seat supports up to 300 pounds and adds 5 inches to the height of the toilet bowl. This product retails for around $75.

Invacare Raised Toilet Seat:

The Invacare Raised Toilet Seat is contoured to fit the user and elevates the seat by 5 inches. The product can support up to 250 pounds, but does not come with handles. This seat retails for $30. Note that Invacare does offer raised toilet seats with support handles.

Tall-ette Elevated Toilet Seat with Legs by Ableware:

This seat by Ableware features an aluminum or steel frame, with contoured foam arm rests designed to aid in sitting or rising from the seat. The legs are height-adjustable and the seat adds 4 inches to the bowl height. Buyers have a choice of either steel (600 pound limit) or aluminum (350 pound limit) legs . The aluminum version retails for around $125, while the steel version sells for roughly $182.

Raised Toilet Seat by Rubbermaid:

The Raised Toilet Seat by Rubbermaid boosts the toilet seat 5 ½ inches. It features skid-resistant rubber pads to help secure it to the toilet bowl. A model with arms is also available. This product retails for about $23.

Medway Corporation Easy Toilet Riser:

Medway Corp takes a different approach with their product as The Toilet Riser sits underneath the toilet itself, raising the bowl by 4 inches. Because it sits underneath the toilet, it is virtually invisible. The riser is made of PVC and can support over 500 pounds. This product sells for approximately $100; however, the buyer will also need to consider paying for installation. Check out this YouTube video highlighting the product.

A raised toilet seat can help elders maintain their independence as well as aid in fall prevention in a room that is one of the most dangerous in the house.
